The challenge
When the idea for automating the filing of New Zealand wage and salary earner’s tax returns was brought to BrandCom, Geoff immediately saw the potential, and rewrote the business model on a single sheet of paper.
BrandCom decided to take equity, management and board positions to bring the product to market. Over the past 18 months the idea has been brought to life.
Obstacles to overcome include:
- Could we make it work?
- Would New Zealand consumers accept giving IRD and bank account details over the Internet?
- How would the government react? How to raise enough capital? How to gain market penetration?
- How to operate in an unregulated, unpredictable, newly created market environment?

Everyday we would wake up and things would change. This required us to be fast on our feet.
There was not one aspect of the business that we didn’t manage, create or consult on we don’t think that there was anything that we didn’t have a hand in for the first 12 months for launch.
TaxRefunds.co.nz Ltd was the fastest growing company in 2009 and the marketing campaign implemented by BrandCom won the 2009 TVNZ New Zealand marketing awards emerging business category for our role in launching the company.
