Geoff Matthews is a brand marketer and business consultant with a proven track record of success in fast growth businesses.

After acting as Personal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. James Bolger ONZ from 1987 to 1997, Geoff embarked on a successful career in advertising and public relations.

In 1999, Geoff completed a postgraduate diploma in Marketing from Victoria University of Wellington, and became a regular guest lecturer at MBA level in his specialist subject, branding.

In 2001 Geoff founded multi- award winning marketing and branding consultancy,  BrandCom Ltd. As part of BrandCom’s own strategy for growth, the company started taking equity positions in start-up companies. In 2005 BrandCom was a Deloitte Fast50 company. In the same year Geoff was the driving force behind creating the Motatapu event; New Zealand’s largest mountain bike event and off-road marathon. Motatapu has won both Best Marketing of an Event and Best Established Event at the NZEPA Awards. In 2007, Geoff was asked to step in and become interim CEO of one of BrandCom’s global client’s company’s, blueseventy (swimming). During his time as CEO, blueseventy started the global ‘swim suits wars’ and had the world’s first ‘super suit’ approved by world governing body FINA. The 20-year old company achieved 100% growth for the year.

Other business successes include the launch of Ltd in 2008, and leading the successful push of export technology company Red Witch Analog Ltd, into the USA in 2009.


In September 2009, Geoff led a consortium to purchase the salmon farm operations on the Tekapo canal, and was appointed CEO to lead the new company’s expansion programme. Under Geoff’s leadership, Mt. Cook Alpine Salmon has won numerous awards including the 2011 TVNZ New Zealand Marketing Award for Transformational Marketing, as well as four New Zealand Food Awards, including the Supreme Award, in the same year.  In 2013, Mt Cook Alpine Salmon won the Deloitte Fast 50 Award for the fastest growing primary sector business in New Zealand.

As well as BrandCom being a five-time winner of the TVNZ New Zealand Marketing Awards, Geoff was voted a finalist in the ‘Marketer of the Year’ category in 2011, and in 2012 and 2013 was a finalist in the Marketing Excellence Category. In 2012 Geoff was elected a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketers (UK).

Geoff has a passion for sport, and as well as being a former top ranked international Ironman triathlete and adventure racer, he was the first person to represent New Zealand at both summer and winter World Triathlon Championships.

He has served on the Board of Triathlon New Zealand and has received a diploma from the International Olympic Committee for his outstanding contribution to the Olympics as a volunteer. In 1990 Geoff was awarded the New Zealand Commemoration Medal for Services to New Zealand.
